The club origins can be found in the Dowty Sports and Socials Club of old. The club consisted of all radio controlled model sports, including cars, airplanes and boats.
During 1991 the Dowty Group was bought by an investment company, which then set about profiting the major divisions of the group. This involved management buyouts and sell off's.
As the manufacturing sectors disappeared from the group it became increasingly difficult to meet the requirements of the Dowty Sports and Social club constitution. The constitution required that the committee were "members" and not "associates" of the sports club. All the committee at the time had now become associates due to the position of their companies being outside the Dowty Group.
The club was in a state of flux, so the committee made the decision to move on, and held an extraordinary annual general meeting on the 14th January 1992 where members voted to form another club and leave the links with the Dowty Sports and Social behind.
So in January 1992 the Dowty Radio Controlled Model Club (DRCMC) ceased and the Merlin Model Flying Cub (MMFC) was Born. Although asked other sectors of the DRCMC were asked to continue with their cars and boats, but most members joined other clubs, leaving the MMFC as a flying club only.
Since then the club has grown in membership and planes, initially flying at a sight West of Cheltenham and now North of Cheltenham.
